Sometimes we forget what really happened on the cross at Calvary.
Cross - symbol for scacrifice/humiliation
The Romans used crosses to execute slaves...symbol of their power against those who opposed them.
A Roman citizen was never allowed to be crucified, only for foreigners who rebelled against them.
We only know about the history of crucifiction because of one person...Jesus Christ.
Matthew 15
The Gospels were written by people who were present during this crucifiction.
John21:24 (eye witness testimony)
Luke 1 (eye witness facts)
Mark 15 - ,70 jewish counsil members interrogating Jesus infront of Pilate
They were trying to bad mouth Jesus before the Roman government ,so that they could crucify Him.
During the course of the interrogation, Jesus never answered one of their questions, untill the end ,His answer condemmed Him to the Cross for our sins. Mark 14
Mark 15 - ,70 jewish counsil members interrogating Jesus infront of Pilate
"This man has been leading our people astray..."
They kept accusing Him of many things, and Pilate was a seasoned governer so He was confused that Jesus never defended Himself against the acquisations. Pilate realised Jesus was not guilty, and he was trying to figure out how he could get out of this,
Pilate's wife even sent him a letter ,warning him of Jesus. (She had a dream about Him)
So Pilate used one of his old tricks, He used the option of setting a prisoner free - Barrabas (According to the four canonical gospels and thenon-canonical Gospel of Peter there was a prevailing Passover custom in Jerusalem that allowed or required Pilate, the praefectus or governor of Judea, to commute one prisoner's death sentence by popular acclaim, and the "crowd" (ochlos), "the Jews" and "the multitude" in some sources, were offered a choice of whether to have either Barabbas or Jesus released from Roman custody. According to the Synoptic Gospels ofMatthew,[1] Mark,[2] and Luke,[3] and the accounts inJohn[4] and the Gospel of Peter, the crowd chose Barabbas to be released and Jesus of Nazareth to be crucified. Pilate is portrayed as reluctantly yielding to the insistence of the crowd. A passage found only in the Gospel of Matthew has the crowd saying, "Let his blood be upon us and upon our children".)
And gave Jesus over to the Jewish counsil to be crucified
